Synology Data Protection is a new line within Synology. The DP series is an all-in-one backup unit including server, drives, accessories and software. These models come with ActiveProtect Manager software which is specifically developed for making backups. For more than three units in a cluster, the additional Synology Active Protect Manager License is required. The DP series come without the well-known functionalities that you are used to in the NAS models, but are all about safely storing your backups. In addition, they offer powerful protection against ransomware through, for example, immutability, airgapping, WORM and access control.
The Synology ActiveProtect DP5200 is a high-performance 1U rackmount backup appliance designed to provide comprehensive protection for business-critical data. Running the dedicated ActiveProtect Manager operating system, it combines backup, replication, disaster recovery, centralized management and ransomware protection in one integrated platform.
The appliance is delivered fully pre-configured, allowing organizations to deploy it within minutes without manually configuring storage pools or RAID arrays.
Supporting a wide range of workloads including VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Windows, Linux, macOS, Microsoft 365, Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, NetApp ONTAP and Nutanix Files, the DP5200 simplifies enterprise-wide backup management from a single interface.
Designed for growing organizations, the DP5200 can manage clusters of up to 1,000 servers and 120,000 workloads, making it ideal for branch offices, mid-sized enterprises and data centers.
Security is built into every layer. Immutable backups, Write Once Read Many (WORM) storage, air-gapped backup copies, encryption and granular access controls provide comprehensive protection against ransomware and unauthorized modifications.
The DP5200 also delivers flexible recovery options including bare-metal recovery, file-level restore, physical-to-virtual (P2V) and virtual-to-virtual (V2V) recovery. Automated backup verification and sandbox recovery testing help ensure business continuity before disasters occur.
To maximize storage efficiency, the appliance utilizes global source-side deduplication, SSD metadata caching and an optimized backup engine that transfers and stores only unique data.
Powered by an Intel Xeon D-1726 6-core processor, 16 GB ECC memory (expandable to 64 GB), four pre-installed 12 TB HDDs configured in RAID 5, two 800 GB SSDs in RAID 1, dual 10GbE networking and a dedicated management interface, the DP5200 is ready for enterprise backup deployments straight out of the box.
